Stuart Scott explains:

"Well, what did the judges see in a contestant like Kyoko Otonashi? They found her to be an interesting sort of girl. A girl made a widow at an early age who takes on the job of an apartment building manager is an intersting choice for a contestant in the Top 20. Then I got to take a look at the picture on the right. For a girl who's a bit of a handyman, she's pretty cute. This girl's first appearance even made a young man aspiring to get into college, who was tired of living under the crazy conditions created by his neighbors, decide to stick around the apartment building known as Maison Ikkoku. Kyoko not only seems to have this effect on this young man named Godai, she also is very caring and helpful to all her tenants. She even likes to party now and then, and drink a bit, which is why I think the judges seem to think so highly of Kyoko Otonashi. From what I've seen, Kyoko Otonashi is a very respectable individual, and she seems to be such a good choice for the Top 20. It is nice to see that the judges were in total agreement of this decision."

"Well, what can I say about Kyoko Otonashi? Well, the first time I was able to see that picture that Stuart was able to see, I thought she seemed like a regular Tim Allen, that is, if Tim Allen was a beautiful and careful girl. Then I happened to get a good look at the picture on the right. Well, it definitely does not suggest anything even close to, say, Red Green's Handyman's Corner's immortal words, If the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy. Most certainly, if I were the young man Godai, who was about to leave his apartment building full of crazy tenants, and I saw Kyoko Otonashi for arrive there for the first time, I would be sure and change my mind and stay there, too. It is quite a shame that she became widowed early in her life, because, although somewhat admirable, she wants to keep holding on the past, as though she were still married and her husband were still alive. Kyoko had even gone so far as to name her ugly-looking dog after her late husband. But all the same, though, I still think she is an attractive-looking girl who is deserving of a spot in the Top 20."
